Choosing the right location for your senior portraits is one of the most exciting parts of planning your session! As a Chicago senior photographer serving the west suburbs, I love helping seniors find a location that feels like them. Whether you are drawn to charming downtown streets, rustic barns, blooming gardens, or grassy fields, the west suburbs offer so much variety.
One of the things I love most about photographing in downtown urban areas is how much variety we can capture in a short walk. Brick walls, ivy covered buildings, benches, steps, iron gates, colorful flowers, and textured backdrops all come together to create a gallery that feels dynamic and unique. While I have favorite spots in each town, I always look for something new at every session. I truly want every senior gallery to feel personal and one of a kind.
If you are having a hard time deciding between an urban look and a nature inspired session, the good news is that you usually do not have to choose! We can often start in a downtown area and then finish at a nearby forest preserve or park just in time for sunset. The combination gives you the best of both worlds in one session, trust me!
The season also plays a big role in planning your senior portraits. In the summer, flowers are in full bloom and everything feels vibrant and green. In the fall, leaves change color and the light softens into that warm golden glow everyone loves. Even the way the light falls throughout the day shifts slightly as the seasons change. From these images, I hope you can see how much the season adds to the overall feel of your portraits.
Here are some of my favorite summer and fall senior portrait locations in the west suburbs:
Downtown Geneva is one of my absolute favorites because it has so much charm! Brick walls and steps, ivy covered walls, picket fences, benches for seated posing, and beautiful summer flowers all create endless options. Every corner offers something different, which makes each gallery feel fresh.

Fabyan is known for its iconic garden arch and iron gate. In the summer, the natural flowers are beautiful, and in the fall the colors are incredible. I love walking across the foot bridge to photograph on the east side of the river where sunset creates the most gorgeous glowing light. As of fall 2025, the iron gates have been taken down for repairs, but we are hoping for their quick return.

Downtown Aurora offers an amazing mix of “edge” and feminine beauty. The city maintains gorgeous gardens along the sidewalks and medians, adding softness to the urban feel. I like to begin sessions on the east side of the river and then wander west to capture sunset over the water. There are so many opportunities for sitting, standing, and walking poses throughout the area.

LeRoy Oaks is known for its two large red barns and charming white historic schoolhouse with a front porch. Both create a rustic look that still feels timeless. If barns are not your style, the rolling fields with seasonal wildflowers and long golden grasses are stunning. Bring your boots, they are my favorite accessory at this location!

Downtown Naperville has beautiful ivy walls, charming streets, benches, and wooden staircases that make posing easy and natural. There are also two green spaces within walking distance. I love that this allows us to capture both urban and nature inspired images in a 90 minute session. North Central College is adjacent to downtown, and with a short walk or quick drive, we can include some of the historic campus buildings for an added classic feel.

Cantigny is beautiful in every season but especially in the summer and fall. Seasonal flowers provide stunning backdrops, from peonies in the spring to roses in the summer and mums in the fall. Weeping willow trees create gorgeous glowing light, and the McCormick Mansion adds an elegant backdrop that feels like a southern colonial estate. And if history is your thing, we’ll stop at the tank park for a quick pose.

Even though these are some of my favorite locations in the west suburbs for senior photos, we are never limited to these locations! They are simply some of my favorites that I’m happy to share with you. If you have a different spot in mind that holds meaning to you, let me know and we’ll make it happen!
I begin scheduling senior sessions in July before senior year and typically begin photographing in August. I know seniors have busy schedules filled with sports, activities, and jobs… The great news? Weather permitting, we can photograph into late November and still find beautiful color from Mother Nature.
Senior year goes by quickly, and your portrait session should feel fun, relaxed, and completely you. If you are looking for a Chicago senior photographer in the west suburbs, I would love to help you plan a session that reflects your personality, style, and this exciting season of life!
